Menstruation, a biological necessity for a woman’s healthy reproductive system, has been a stigma & taboo subject for centuries, leading to women using unsanitary menstrual products or even leading to girls missing or dropping out of school, women missing work, and a shroud of stigma continually surrounds periods. We have all come up with an alternative name for our periods, Aunt flow, the crimson wave, time of the month, to name only a few, we’ve all mutedly whispered ‘period’ during a conversation with a close friend, or quietly asked a close co-worker if they have a tampon as your period arrived early. We have all felt the stigma and taboo of periods, let alone the taboo of talking about them....
Period poverty severely impacts opportunities for women and girls in many parts of the world by restricting their education and employment opportunities. Lack of access to menstrual products and clean sanitary facilities directly impacts women and continuously feeds the poverty cycle. 30% of girls in Africa DROP OUT of school because they fall behind in their studies or are ashamed to attend school after being teased by their peers for soiling their clothes with blood. In rural Zimbabwe I met the Numwa Women’s Support Group, who initiated their sanitary wear project to meet the needs for menstrual protection for girls. With girls often missing up to five days of school a month because of a lack of sanitary protection, that’s almost 25%...
Period underwear is still a relatively new phenomenon, some people can’t remember the days before they made the switch, and to some people it’s an entirely new concept, and to be honest, a little daunting. Trusting in a product to protect you from a still very taboo natural bodily function women have, is a daunting thought. So, what is it? How does it work? The built-in additional fabric in the gusset of the underwear absorbs the period flow and wicks away the moisture to keep the wearer dry and comfortable, and with...
Period cramps are often a very unwelcome marker of each month. Some of us get off relatively lightly with the odd twinge or a general ache in our lower abdomen, and some of us suffer heavily, cramping from morning until night for 5 days + and being bound to the sofa, bed or somewhere in between. The severity of our own period cramps can be dependent on a few different factors, but unfortunately there isn’t much we can do to stop them. However, there are a few things we can do to survive them, & possibly even ease them slightly! #1 - FOODS & VITAMINS TO HELP EASE PERIOD CRAMPS Eating a healthy diet may be a way to...
Have you ever noticed small patches in your underwear have changed colour, or bleached slightly like this? Has this ever worried you or freaked you out? Simply put, this is called bleaching, and it's completely normal. In fact, if you noticed discoloured patches on your panties and thought something was wrong with you, then you can relax because it is actually a good sign. A bleached patch in your underwear means that your vagina is healthy. A healthy vagina has a natural pH value between 3.5 and 4.5, which means it is largely acidic, especially if your vagina is lower on the acidity scale, the acidity can then bleach natural fibres over time being exposed to the vaginal discharge....
